In una terra di nessuno, a 40 metri sotto il livello del mare, in una base militare dismessa a 250 km a Sud Est di Los Angeles, vive un gruppo di persone ai confini del mondo, senza elettricità, senza acqua, senza polizia, senza governo. Ken e Lily, Carol e Wayne, Mike, Cindy, Sterling...la comunità che appariva in “Into the Wild” di Sean Penn. Non hanno rifiutato la società, le convenzioni, la “normalità”, ma ciascuno di loro, per circostanze diverse, si è trovato “fuori”.
Selezionato in più di 40 festival internazionali, Below Sea Level ha ottenuto il Premio Orizzonti Doc. alla 65. Mostra del Cinema di Venezia, i premi Miglior Film e Giuria Giovani al festival Cinéma du Réel di Parigi, il Premio Miglior Film al festival One World di Praga e numerosi altri riconoscimenti.

The film is a documentary dealing with actual places, people and events. But it feels like a fable because the people are outsized, because the terrain is huge and suggests myth, and because the stories interwave, not to solve or drive a plot, but to demonstrate the flow of life itself. Events can seem random when time will reveal them to be determined. In part, this is a return to documentary in the manner of Flaherty: "The possibility of finding romance in realistic materials sometimes through the value of simple observational camera work that could capture the essence of things".
Thus, observation without judgment, as if nothing outside that reality existed. Great event or little stories, all kept at this same distance. The film's point of view is simple and naked. It is not the eye of an outsider looking in. It is simply the eye of the place itself witnessing the life of the place. And never blinking. […] [Every scene] simply exists in this place, in this desert, as the sun skins and the ashes and bits of bone float down to the earth. That is the point of view of Below Sea Level.
